Push or fold vs riichi
Someone just declared riichi. Pick your hand, the turn and the tile you'd cut. The chart tells you whether to push or fold.
The chart says
Lean fold
Folding has a small edge, but the table situation can flip it. Either way, the choice moves your results very little.
- Riichi
- Non-dealer riichi, you're a non-dealer
- Your hand
- 1-shanten, two ryanmen, closed
- Value
- Riichi + pinfu
- Turn
- Mid, turns 7 to 12
- Tile to cut
- Non-suji 2, 3, 7 or 8
How to use this
- Pick who declared riichi and whether you're the dealer.
- Pick closed or open, then your hand shape and its value.
- Pick the turn and the class of tile you want to cut. The verdict updates as you go.
- In the last five discards and only playing to be tenpai at the draw? Switch to Keiten at the draw.
How to read the verdict
- Push and Fold: one side wins by more than 500 points of expected value. Follow it in almost every game.
- Lean push and Lean fold: a small edge. Scores, dora and reads can flip it, and the choice moves your results very little.
- Close call: both options are worth about the same. Let the table decide.
- Closed values include riichi and assume pinfu where the shape allows it. Riichi + 1 han sits between riichi + pinfu and riichi + pinfu + 1 han.
Where the numbers come from
Push/fold chart: simulations by epsilon69399, translated
epsilon69399 simulated push/fold choices against riichi and published the results as colour charts on a Japanese blog. The tool reads each verdict straight from the colours of an English translation of those charts. Original posts:
These numbers are statistical guidance for Houou-level 4-player hanchan. Your table, the scores and your reads can make a different play right.
Want a pro to check your real hands?
The chart assumes the riichi sits to your right and everyone else folds. Real games are messier. Send me a log and I'll show you where you pushed or folded against the numbers.
