is 2 on a and 1 han after a call. You hold the same sequence in all three suits.
The name is sanshoku doujun (三色同順), and players shorten it to sanshoku. This site's glossary also lists it as Three Colored Runs.
One run in each suit
345 man, 345 pin, and 345 sou is sanshoku. The numbers have to match. 345 man, 345 pin, and 456 sou is not.
The hand waits on or
. Every tile is 2 through 8, and the shape is closed, all runs, with a plain pair.
makes the third 345. That's sanshoku, pinfu, and tanyao: 4 han 30 fu on a . A collects 7,700. The dealer collects 11,600.
makes 234 sou instead. That's and : 2 han 30 fu. A non-dealer ron collects 2,000. The dealer collects 2,900.
Same hand, same wait. The 5 sou pays 5,700 more on a non-dealer ron. Those payments have no , no , and no sticks.
The glossary entry is the short form: the same sequence in all three suits, 2 han closed and 1 han open.
Closed or open
The EMA 2016 rules file mixed triple chow with the 1 fan yaku, and add a fan when the hand is concealed. Tenhou's rules list it at 2 han and mark it as losing a han after a call. Both give the same pair of numbers as the row on this site: 2 closed, 1 open.
An open sanshoku
You called on 456 sou: . These ten tiles are still in your hand.
The hand waits on or
.
makes 456 pin, the third 456. The open sanshoku is 1 han. The fu is only the base 20, and an open hand with nothing else is counted as 30. At 1 han 30 fu, a non-dealer ron collects 1,000. The dealer collects 1,500.
makes 345 pin. The hand then has no yaku at all, so you can't win on it, by ron or by tsumo.
Pass that 3 pin and you can't ron any tile until your next turn. Tenhou's rules say a waiting tile that gives no yaku still makes you for the turn. The EMA 2016 rules say the same in section 3.4.5.
Triplets are a different yaku
Three triplets of the same number, one in each suit, is sanshoku doukou. That one is 2 han, open or closed. Sanshoku doujun is runs.
Common mistakes
- Mixing the numbers. 345, 345, and 456 is three runs, not sanshoku.
- Counting 2 han after a call. An open sanshoku is 1 han.
- Forgetting the dead side of the wait. The open hand above wins on 6 pin and has no yaku on 3 pin.
- Looking for ittsu in the same hand. Both together would need five runs, and a hand only has four sets.
What sits with it
Tanyao sits in the same hand when the run is 234 through 678 and the rest is simple. Pinfu sits in a closed sanshoku with a plain pair and a . The first hand on this page has all three on a 5 sou.
