is 1 , and the hand has to be closed. You need four sequences, a pair that is not , and a .

The name players use is pinfu (平和). This site's glossary also lists it as All Sequences. Tanyao is the other common 1 han shape: a hand of tiles 2 through 8. Pinfu is the shape of the melds and the wait, and the tiles can include terminals.

The four conditions

All four are the EMA 2016 wording, and they match the 1 han row on this site.

  1. The hand is closed. No , , or .
  2. Four sequences and one pair. No triplet and no quad.
  3. The pair is not a dragon, your , or the . A guest wind is allowed.
  4. The winning tile finishes a two-sided wait. An , a , a , or a wait on two pairs does not count.

This waits on or . Either tile finishes the 67s shape from both sides. The pair of is not yakuhai.

The glossary entry is the short form: a , four sequences, a valueless pair, and an open-ended wait.

An open hand

A called hand scores no han from pinfu. The open column for it is empty. You still need some other yaku, usually tanyao or a yakuhai triplet, before that open hand can win.

What a bare pinfu pays

Pinfu itself is 1 han. The fu comes from the shape.

A is 30 fu. That is the 20 fu base, plus 10 for a closed ron. A collects 1,000. The dealer collects 1,500.

A tsumo is 20 fu. The extra 2 fu for a tsumo is not added on a pinfu shape. A closed tsumo also has , so the hand is 2 han 20 fu, and the 1 han row never applies. A non-dealer tsumo collects 400 from each other non-dealer and 700 from the dealer. A dealer tsumo collects 700 from each player.

Those payments have no and no sticks. Add riichi and a ron is 2 han. A tsumo with riichi is 3 han, still at 20 fu.

What removes it

A pair of East, when you are East or the round is East, is yakuhai. The pair is worth fu, so the hand is not pinfu. In the East round the dealer's East pair is both winds at once, and it still blocks pinfu.

A 23 wait is two-sided. A 12 wait is an edge. A 13 wait is closed in the middle. A wait on a lone pair is a . Any of those keeps the sequences and drops the yaku.

can sit inside the same hand. Two identical sequences are still sequences. Tanyao can too, when every tile is 2 through 8.

Price a pinfu hand

The score calculator turns 1 han 30 fu, or 2 han 20 fu on a tsumo, into a payment. Add honba when the table has them.
