"How long until I reach Saint?"
Every Mahjong Soul player asks this at some point. Adept to Master takes hundreds of games, and Saint takes more. I wanted a number instead of a guess, so I built a tool that calculates it.
The rank calculator
It runs the City ladder too. On Tenhou, the Tenhou rank calculator shows points per game, games to promote, stable , and your R trend.
Enter your starting rank, target rank, and placement rates. The simulator runs 1,000 trials and shows you:
- Success probability: your odds of reaching the target
- Games needed: average games to get there
- Rank distribution: where you'll likely end up
- Journey insights: expected demotions and rank floor
It's free and needs no account.
How it works
The calculator uses Monte Carlo simulation with Mahjong Soul's actual point system:
- Accurate room rewards (Bronze through Throne)
- Correct penalties per rank
- Proper demotion mechanics
- Room restrictions based on rank tier
Each trial plays your whole climb game by game. A thousand trials is enough for the averages to settle.
Why placement rates matter more than you think
Most players focus on avoiding 4th place. That's correct, but incomplete.
A few points of first-place rate add up over hundreds of games. One run I did: south games, Expert 1 to Master 1, with 25% 1st, 26% 2nd, 25% 3rd, 24% 4th. Moving five points from 3rd to 1st cut the average from about 460 games to about 240.
The calculator lets you experiment:
- What if I improved my 1st rate by 3%?
- What if I reduced my 4th rate from 25% to 20%?
- How does switching from to affect my climb?
Journey insights: demotions and the rank floor
Climbing isn't linear. You'll demote. Sometimes multiple times.
The calculator tracks:
- Average demotions per climb
- Zero-demotion probability
- Rank floor: how low you might drop
If the simulation says you'll demote twice on the way, a demotion is part of the plan, not a sign you've stopped improving.
Per-room configuration
Your performance varies by room. Gold room plays differently than Jade. Throne is another level entirely.
Advanced mode lets you set different placement rates for each room. This gives more accurate predictions for players who know their room-specific stats.
Share your results
Run a simulation and share it. The calculator generates:
- A link that reopens your exact settings
- Dynamic preview images for social media
- Copy-paste text with your key stats
Send it to a friend and compare climbs.
Try it
Use your real placement rates from your stats page, not the ones you hope for. If the numbers look grim, they show you which placement to work on first.
