Yaku門前清自摸和

Menzen tsumo

1 han, and only on a closed hand. Win on your own draw, and the hand has a yaku even with nothing else.

  • 1 han
  • Closed only
  • Your own draw

門前清自摸和 Menzen Tsumo. Self-Draw. Menzen tsumo in the glossary.

is 1 for winning on your own draw with a . That's the whole condition. A closed hand that wins by tsumo always scores it, so it never lacks a yaku on a self-draw.

The full Japanese name is 門前清自摸和, menzenchin tsumohou. Players say menzen tsumo, or tsumo for short. This site's glossary lists it as Self-Draw, and the EMA 2016 rules call it Fully Concealed Hand.

Tsumo on its own is also the word for any draw from the wall and the call you make to win on one. The menzen tsumo card in the glossary is the yaku. The tsumo card is the draw and the call.

What counts as closed

Closed means no , no , and no . A closed keeps the hand closed. Mahjong Soul's Japanese FAQ says a closed kan is the one kan that leaves a hand closed, and the EMA 2016 rules say the same about a concealed kong.

You don't need . A closed hand you never declared still scores menzen tsumo when it draws its winner.

The winning tile has to be your own draw. A after your kan counts, because the EMA 2016 rules treat a win on it as a self-draw. So a closed hand that wins with rinshan kaihou scores menzen tsumo too. A never does, and neither does chankan, which is a ron on a kan tile.

A closed hand with no other yaku

This hand waits on only, a on 13 sou. It has no yaku of its own. The 1s and 9s rule out . The middle wait rules out . 123 shows up in man and sou but not in pin, so there's no , and the pin runs stop at 456 and 789, so there's no .

Without riichi, a ron on has no yaku. You can't take it. Draw the tile yourself and menzen tsumo is the yaku.

The fu are the base 20, plus 2 for the tsumo, plus 2 for the middle wait. 24 rounds up to 30. At 1 han 30 fu, a collects 300 from each other non-dealer and 500 from the dealer. A dealer collects 500 from each player.

Declare riichi on the same tiles and both wins open up. A ron is riichi alone: 20, plus 10 for a closed ron, plus 2 for the middle wait. 32 rounds up to 40, and 1 han 40 fu pays a non-dealer 1,300 and the dealer 2,000. A tsumo is riichi and menzen tsumo, still at 30 fu. At 2 han 30 fu, a non-dealer collects 500 from each other non-dealer and 1,000 from the dealer.

Those payments have no , no , and no riichi sticks.

Pinfu tsumo stays at 20 fu

A closed ron adds 10 fu. A tsumo adds 2 instead. Pinfu is the exception: a pinfu tsumo adds nothing and stays at a flat 20.

This closed hand waits on or , from both sides. Four runs and a pair of 9 pin make it pinfu.

A ron is pinfu alone: 1 han 30 fu. A non-dealer collects 1,000. The dealer collects 1,500.

A tsumo adds menzen tsumo and stays at 20 fu: 2 han 20 fu. A non-dealer collects 400 from each other non-dealer and 700 from the dealer, 1,500 in all. A dealer collects 700 from each player.

With riichi, the tsumo is 3 han 20 fu: 700 from each non-dealer and 1,300 from the dealer. The scoring guide counts a hand like this one, line by line.

Tenhou, Mahjong Soul, and EMA 2016

Tenhou's rules list 門前清自摸和 at 1 han and state the pinfu tsumo at 20 fu. They also add the 2 tsumo fu on a win off the .

Mahjong Soul's Japanese FAQ defines the yaku as a closed hand that wins by tsumo. Its English FAQ calls it Fully Concealed Hand and gives the same 1 han.

The EMA 2016 rules have it at 1 han under that English name. They add 2 fu for a self-draw and drop them when the hand scores pinfu, the same as Tenhou.

An open hand can still tsumo

A chi, a pon, or an open kan doesn't stop a tsumo. It only stops this yaku. An open hand needs another yaku before it can win at all, such as tanyao or yakuhai. An open tsumo with nothing but the base 20 fu still adds the 2 tsumo fu, which rounds up to 30.

Furiten and the closed tsumo

A furiten hand can't ron, but it can still win by tsumo. The EMA 2016 rules say so directly. That's where menzen tsumo earns its place: a closed hand with no riichi still has a yaku when it draws its winner.

Common mistakes

  • Scoring it on an open hand. One chi, pon, or open kan removes it.
  • Treating a closed kan as a call. The hand stays closed.
  • Adding the 2 tsumo fu to a pinfu tsumo. It stays at 20 fu.
  • Waiting for a ron on a closed hand with no yaku. Without riichi, only a tsumo wins it.
  • Mixing up the yaku and the call. You say tsumo for any self-draw win. Menzen tsumo is the han a closed hand gets for it.

What sits with it

Riichi, ippatsu, pinfu, and tanyao all stack with it. Rinshan kaihou and are tsumo wins, so a closed hand scores menzen tsumo with them. Chankan and are rons, so it never sits with those two. The haitei and houtei page covers the last-tile pair.

Price a tsumo

The score calculator turns 2 han 20 fu, a pinfu tsumo, into 400 from each non-dealer and 700 from the dealer. A dealer's pinfu tsumo is 700 all.
